The Ideal College Roommate Is Out There
Finding the right roommate for college is a tough thing to do.
Deciding on the right college roommate is much like selecting the right spouse. While this may sound a bit extreme it is essential to remember that a dorm room is pretty small and two people who can't stand each other in a petite room like that can equal trouble. More than half of the people who leave to school actually cite their incompatibility with their roommate as one of the primary reasons for quitting school and moving back home. It is a fact that more than anything else we want that human connectivity.
The majority of colleges and universities won't allow students to decide on their own roommates and this of course can present many problems when it comes to living accommodations. Not only as this directly relates to taste and habits but also as it pertains to creating a good study environment. Most students are used to studying in their room and don't find it useful to have to leave and go study at the campus library although at times this is extremely vital.
Roommates that can be selected are best but even then many will select their roommate based on superficial aspects of them and not on the purity of who they are. For instance having a roommate that is popular or dresses well is really a lot less important to your overall living experience than having a roommate that is honest or neat. These are factors that need to rank pretty high on the roommate scale.
If you are heading to a college and know someone else who will be attending there as well
, you will probably be better off trying to room with them because rooming with someone you know is usually much easier than doing so with a total stranger. Plus you will find that coordinating items for your dorm room and making everything come together in a fashionably coherent way is really much simpler with someone that you know how to deal with.Getting a roommate that you can collaborate with and coordinate with is both helpful and necessary. Luck of the draw roommate pools don't usually cut it and even in places where there are roommate ads it is imperative that you look beyond the superficial to what the person will really be like to live with. You will be spending a fair amount of time with your college roommate and in your dorm room so it is best to make sure that you have what you need to be successful at college.
